Waterton- Buffalo

We will be in the Many Glacier area for 3 days in June, just wondering if we should make the trip to Waterton.....its a 1 hour drive?? Would love to see wildlife, esp. bears and buffalo??? Is this possible, any locations better then others??? What can we do and should do in a day trip?

Thanks!

I find MG to have the best animal viewing and scenery. I have seen more bears in MG that the rest of the park combined. (no buffalo in MG)That said, Waterton is also very scenic. It is a 1 hour drive, and very worth while. The prince of wales hotel is a classic and the boat trip to goat haunt with the 3 mile hike to kootenai rarely fails to produce moose(s). Remember the documentation required for Canada.

Camping girl posts here often and is the resident waterton expert.

The bison paddock, just north of the main entrance to Waterton park on highway 6, is the ONLY place to see buffalo - they don%26#39;t roam the open plains anymore.

The Red Rock Canyon Parkway is generally a very good spot to see bears - watch for a spot about 2 miles down the parkway, where the road drops down a small hill. There will be berry bushes on either side of the road and bears can often be spotted feeding there. Keep your eyes open, but also watch for other vehicles pulled off along the side of the road. This is an obvious tip that there is wildlife of some sort along the roadway.

In June you may still have some luck with seeing elk in the area in/around the golf course at Waterton as well. You can almost count on seeing deer in town and occasionally big horned sheep can be spotted feeding around town too.
