When taking the boat shuttle near Many Glacier Hotel to shorten Grinnell Glacier hike, do you need a reservation? How often does the shuttle operate?

During July and August the boat goes out 7 times a day, I think it is 5 other months. Three of the departure times coincide with the guided hike to Grinnell and I would assume people taking that hike would get first seating. If extra seats then others can ride. The first boat leaves at 8:30 and is used for the guided hike but we have taken this one and were not doing the hike. We bought our tickets the night before. If want want the early boat for the guided hike, be sure and get tickets the night before. People were being turned away when we were there last August.
