Tent Cmping

I%26#39;ll be heading to yellowstone with thte family mid-august. We%26#39;ll be tent camping and was looking for some direction as to which campground (preferably one that takes reservations) would be best for us. Also, how far in advance do we need to make reservations?

Have you considered camping inside Yellowstone?

Here is a link to some information.

Tent Cmping

For how many days will you be camping? Would you be willing to move to a different campground for part of your stay? What are your major interests? Some like the geothermal areas, some want the open valleys where they are more likely to see wildlife, some may want to be near the lake, others want to hike around the canyon or up a mountain for the wide open vistas. Give some hints and get better advice.

In June we drove to a campground and got a site without a reservation. We reserved at another campground the night before and got in (that was a squeaker, another hour and we wouldn%26#39;t have). In mid-August we drove in and ended in a different campground than what we wished for after another 50 mile drive and tented among the RV%26#39;s (try not to do that). Many people do not know that you can reserve a campsite. You have to call to reserve, it cannot be done over the internet.

There are some tent-only, no reservations sites in the park too. They go first thing in the morning, so it is best to travel to an area, get your site, then backtrack if needed to view the area.

There are still campgrounds available now. FYI, they will want to know what exact vehicle you will be driving so they can figure the length of it, and the exact size of your tent (8x15 family tent or 7x3 backpacker?). You are only allowed two tents per site.
