Cracker Flats trail ride, and canoeing Swiftcurrent lake

Hello again. In addition to hiking at Glacier, for some variety we want to take a trail ride for a few hours or perhaps half day, but not an all day ride. The woman I spoke to at the outfitters in Many Glacier suggested Cracker Flats. It seems kind of talked down as a hike but she said it is beautiful as a trail ride. We%26#39;ll only be at Glacier for 5 days so we want to make sure the things we pick are really memorable. Has anyone done the Cracker Flats trail ride, or even the hike, and what is the scenery like? Is it worth doing? And I just have to ask, do the horses spook if they see a Grizzly and is it safe to be on a horse in those circumstances? My thinking is that Grizzlies wouldn%26#39;t come too close to a large group of horses and that we%26#39;d be safer, but how do the horses feel about that? Also, we would like to kayak or canoe a bit in a nice lake, probably Swiftcurrent. Is this one of those areas where the winds really pick up in the afternoon making being on the water difficult? We may be on the water around noon or early afternoon, maybe even later. Or is it pretty quiet all day? Knowing this would help in our planning when to fit that in. Thanks in advance.

I don%26#39;t know the answers to your questions, but I loved this report about the hike to Cracker lake and area:

I have seen the horses head out for cracker lake, and assume the flats ride just stays on the backside of the lake rather than turn up the canyon to cracker lake. There are bears here and again, I ';assumr'; they are familiar with the bears so do not react in a bad way. Certainly, the bears do not like horses. Not a lot to see hear as compared to cracker lake, but if you want to be on a horse this might work. There is a ride out of Lake McD. that follows the river that might be more scenic that you could check out.

I have seen the kyaks on swiftcurrent and it is a scenic paddle.

I%26#39;m going to put the trailride on the back burner. I thought it would be nice variety and a way to get somewhere different that we may not hike to, but it really doesn%26#39;t sound like the scenery is as nice as some other hikes might be. I%26#39;ve ridden alot, we don%26#39;t need to ride nose to tail at Glacier if the scenery won%26#39;t be worth it. Unless all the trails are closed or something we%26#39;ll stick to more hiking and the paddle around Swiftcurrent. Thanks for the input.

I would agree that Cracker Lake is a beautiful place %26amp; great destination, but I don%26#39;t think that Cracker Flats is that spectacular of a choice. The scenery is still wonderful, but I don%26#39;t think that it%26#39;s as worthwhile for the cost as canoeing or hiking would be. You get some nice views of Lake Sherburne and the surrounding mountains from the open fields, but I just feel that you would enjoy your time more by doing something else. Here are some photos I took hiking to Cracker Lake. You would see all of this if you rode to Cracker Flats. Again, very nice but there are definitely more scenic choices IMO.
