Glacier National Park to Billings possible routes, must sees

Need help with routing, again!

We%26#39;ll be traveling from Swiftcurrent Inn, Many Glacier, Glacier National Park to Billings in a day.

We%26#39;ll have time for a few quick stops and maybe a picnic. It appears that the most direct route would not be interstate. We%26#39;re fairly sure that we%26#39;ll take US Hwy 89 to Great Falls. From Great Falls, there are options, including:

continuing on US Hwy 89 to I-10 just east of Livingston

OR

US Hwy 87/89 to US Hwy 87 to US Hwy 191 to I-10 at

Big Timber.

THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS AND DETAILS!

First route is more scenic. As you past eastward away from the ';out ranges'; and lower elevation things get more dry in a hurry so tend to be more rangeland like. From our personal experience US-89 over the Little Belt Mountains was very pretty and we actually did have a picnic lunch at some tables at the top of Kings Hill Pass. Although this was around 31 years ago. I think it was at just a small National Forest Service campground. I still have a pic of my young and very pregnant wife sitting at the table so the place has fond memories.

The south of White Sulpher Springs 89 parallels the Crazy Mts. The other route down to Big Timber (sort of a misnomer) is more rolling hills prairie like.

THANKS so much for sharing your experiences.

It appears that we%26#39;ll get the chance to see Livingston either going to Glacier from Yellowstone or on the way from Glacier to Billings.

sequim88,

Thanks so much. ainwa and RobUSA,

Thanks for your suggestions. I know, we%26#39;ll have two really long but scenic driving days and well worth for two full days in Glacier National Park.

We%26#39;re planning on a more westerly route -

US 89 to US 287/I-15 to I-10...

460 miles / 7 hours 54 minutes per Google maps, so maybe they%26#39;ll be time for a couple of quick stops.

I drove last year from East Glacier to Livingston via route 89 and the ride took about 7hrs but it was beautiful! Much nicer drive than route 15. We stoped and had lunch in Great Falls on the way at Montana Wheat. Take some time to see both Livingston and Bozeman which I like a lot better than Billings. We spend our summers near Livingston if you have any other questions.
