I%26#39;m thinking of taking a week vacation to Glacier in Mid-June. However, I%26#39;m interested in doing a lot of day hiking, and it sounds like there might be issues with snow. Is it likely that many areas won%26#39;t be accessible during June? Would it be better to wait until July? The trade-off is that I like to avoid the crowds, so June seems like the best time for that. Thanks!
Hiking in Mid-June
Probably the higher elevation trails won%26#39;t be clear. In mid-June you usually can%26#39;t hike all the way to Grinnell Glacier or Ptarmigan Tunnel. Also most passes, (Siyeh, Piegan, Swiftcurrent, etc.) will be snow covered. July will be busier but it would be better for hiking. Another option for less crowds is the first couple of weeks of Sept. The lodges are still open and weather usually nice. You may see snow, but it usually doesn%26#39;t stay on the ground too long.
Hiking in Mid-June
Go for July. Still not that crowded and many more high trils open and some wildfilowers out. In Glacier, more often than not, once on the trail for a mid-to-longer hike you are pretty much alone anyway. You may have a few scrambles over snow fileds, depending on your routes. Weather is more predictable in July also, June often a very wet month.
Thanks for the advice. We booked tickets to come the second week of July. Now we%26#39;ll have to see what is available for lodging during that busier time.
