September or October????

We want to travel in late September or anytime in October and wonder if the trails, etc. will be accessible and what to expect of the weather. Will October be too cold or snowy? What about places to stay? Are they available into October? When do things start to close down because of bad weather?

September or October????

earlist in Sept. is best as the park starts to shut down. Snows can begin and at times close GTTS. Oct. is getting cold and the colors have all turned. Tours, hotels and concessionaires will have all closed shortly after mid-Sept. Easy access as nearly everyone will be gone, but little open. There are accomodations just outside the park in St. Mary and West glacier that will be open.

September or October????

The GTTSR closed last year Sept. 15 and I think that is the plan again this year. They are doing a major overhaul on it. Last year you could access Logan Pass from one side or the other, depending on the work schedule, but could not drive across the entire road. As stated, all in park lodging and eateries shut down by mid Sept. If you can go right before everything closes, that would be my pick.

Thank you for your replies. We are thinking of taking the train from Chicago to Glacier? Is that possible? What are the logistics of renting a car near the parks? Are there any tips on train travel on a budget. I%26#39;ve heard it is best to buy tickets for a ';sleeper'; after getting on the train. Any comments about days to travel, etc. that might save a few $$$.

I think you will want to take the Empire Builder, it goes to Glacier. I just looked at their web page and it lists the schedule and prices. It seems you can get a ';roomette'; that has two chairs that convert to beds much cheaper than a ';bedroom.'; I would think you can rent a car at the train station but am not sure. Check the Empire Builder%26#39;s webpage and it might tell about rental cars. I have never taken the train to Glacier but it looks like a nice trip. Let us know what you find out and if you go, how it turns out.
